🎃 SUPERFOOD SPOTLIGHT: Pumpkin: a superfood? Don’t be spooked! More than just pumpkin pies and lattes, you’ll find pumpkin a powerhouse rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber (once you strip away all the sugar and coffee). Read why you should pick up edible pumpkin (or winter squash) at farmers market or grocers for heart, weight, and cancer health.

🦇 RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Riana here! Thanks to all who requested the focaccia recipe which inspired my autumnal landscape food art. Here’s the basic bread recipe I used— and to decorate it like I did, here are my tips:

  • thinly slice butternut squash or sweet potato for MOON shapes.

  • use an Xacto knife to cut out tiny BATS, CATS, or other shapes from bell peppers (I used purple bell from our garden)

  • herb stems like sage and rosemary create really beautiful SHRUB & TREE shapes for your focaccia landscape

  • use tomatoes or peppers for the round MUSHROOM shapes. Butternut squash created the mushroom’s STEM!

  • flaked sea salt and chopped fresh rosemary can create texture and details.

  • use your imagination! What else could you cut out with thinly sliced colorful veggies like rainbow carrots or purple potato? Fruits/veggies with high water content (cucumbers, apples, celery) could get soggy on top of your bread, so avoid those.

🎨 MIND: Can art heal the mind? Though Medicine and A.I. were top discussions at this year’s Society of Neuroscience Conference, the gathering’s 2-hour opening focused solely on art in multiple forms: music, neuroscience-inspired visual arts, and more! Scientists are noticing arts have powerful effects on the mind, health, and psyche for therapeutic potential.  Could we start seeing more art therapies in doctor offices…? After seeing what was covered at this recent conference, it may be possible!

💊 BODY: Quite controversial, scientists have uncovered a molecule they claim can provide the benefits of fasting or exercise in a pill. Named LaKe, it attempts to mimic the physical state of running 6 miles… on an empty stomach! While many will covet such a pill, nature reminds us there are no shortcuts to health. In a responsible system the application will be limited to those with no ability to exercise while ill— maybe with Parkinson’s or true physical inability. Sadly, profit motives will likely exploit as large a market as possible, including those who see this as an ‘easy’ way stay fit.

🧘 SPIRIT: “Just meditate!” Tired of hearing the saying? Or… has it worked for you? When it comes to pain, research is showing that meditation can bring considerable pain relief… and not from the placebo effect. But instead, from something far more powerful! See for yourself in the study, pain relief from meditation was even detected on MRI scans of the brain. Another good reason to add mindfulness and meditation to your daily toolkit.
