10/7/24: šŸ›Œ 44-year host, exercise vs pollution, and Alzheimer's steps

Plus: Alzheimerā€™s and what you can do

Happy Monday my friend,

šŸ”„ When ecosystems destabilize, we can see strange and unprecedented emergencies and collapse. But is what we consider ā€˜destructionā€™ always inherently ā€˜badā€™? One example that expanded my perspective is the concept of good fire ā€“ how burning is a natural part of cycles and can have significant benefit under the right circumstances.

MONDAY MOTIVATION

David Suzuki (Credit: Ben Nelms/CBC)

šŸŒ BE THE CHANGE: David Suzuki is a prominent environmentalist and science communicator. He is of Japanese-Canadian descent and has been a leading voice in environmental advocacy for decades. He hosted the Canadian television series The Nature of Things for an impressive 40+ years. Suzuki has made significant contributions to raising awareness about our human health connection to ecosystems, biodiversity loss, and solutions for more sustainable practices. His work has had a profound impact on environmental policy and public opinion. Hereā€™s a great clip from David about how we are Nature.

šŸŒ¾RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Brunch can be a challenging meal for healthy options. For those leaning toward the low-gluten side of things, try out these Buckwheat Crepes with Caramelized Onions - you can make the choice for completely gluten free or just low gluten, as well as swapping out the dairy, depending on your diet. Plus: itā€™s packed full of savory healthy vegetable fillings making it a great choice for lunch or dinner, too.

šŸŽ SUPERFOOD SPOTLIGHT: Moringa is taking the superfood limelight by storm. But what is it, exactly? This bright green powdered herb is full of beta-carotene, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and moreā€” and comes from pods called ā€œdrumsticksā€ that grow from trees in Asia! Sounds strangeā€¦but also, super good for you. Read more about moringa and how to get more of it into your diet.

šŸ§  MIND: We take our bodies to the gymā€” but what do we do about our brains? If you want the same ā€œbrain fitnessā€ as physical fitness, check out brain fitness exercises that experts say could be called a ā€œgym workout for the mind.ā€ These 6 activities could greatly improve your mental sharpness, focus, and learning abilities all while reducing the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and other neurological issues with age.

šŸƒ BODY: Pollution is obviously bad for physical health, but what does science have to say about how physical exercise can combat the effects of environmental pollution? Does being active help combat the negative impacts of pollutionā€”or could it make it worse in some ways, such as breathing during intense cardio exercise? Youā€™ll have to read the research on this oneā€”itā€™s fascinating.

šŸ«€ SPIRIT: Improving your spiritual life can boost your cardiovascular health, according to this recent study. One researcher tested subjects and their blood pressure during a course of several weeksā€”all while sending them spiritual and uplifting messages! Not surprisingly, having a spiritual perspective incorporated into oneā€™s daily life could drastically improve your health. Many test subjects found themselves with lower blood pressure during the study.

When we forget that we are embedded in the natural world, we also forget that what we do to our surroundings we are doing to ourselves.
