4/22/24: My earliest music video, organ communication, and hula hoop health

It's Earth Day, so here's something from the vault...

Happy Monday my friend,

Happy Earth Day my friends! If you didn’t know, my start as an eco-activist was in music…and way back in 2013 I released this music video titled ‘Earth Day’. No budget or crew, so my first thought was ‘is this too embarrassing to share?’…but then I thought: a butterfly is not ashamed of having been a caterpillar.

I hope you give a listen on the way to a community clean-up, garden event, forest bathing, or something today to honor this important holiday and our glorious home planet. 🌎

Monday Motivation

🏔️ BE THE CHANGE: 22-year-old Indigenous earth activist, Charitie Ropati, received the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Conservation Leadership Award in fall of last year. Her work involves bolstering Native American representation in STEM, exploring how environmental degradation impacts the ecology of Alaska, and empowering Indigenous young women and girls following in her footsteps.

🪱 RECIPE OF THE WEEK: How about celebrating Earth Day with a Chia Pudding Dirt Cup?! Dairy free, sweetened only with dates, and complete with chocolate earthworms. You have to see the pic (and recipe) to understand how cute this is – and how well it honors our one of our most precious resources…the topsoil.

🎃 SUPERFOOD SPOTLIGHT: Next time autumn festivities, or Halloween, come around—don’t throw out that pumpkin, squash, or jack-o-lantern! While not all decorative pumpkins and squash are edible, experts give good reason why the edible ones could easily be called superfoods: they’re full of vitamins A, B, C, E, and even iron. They could also be drought-fighting, highly sustainable powerhouse food crops too.

🧠 MIND: The brain can communicate with all our organs. But do our other organs talk back? And what do they say? This fascinating study captured lungs “talking” to the brain to communicate sickness and infection there. It reveals that the nervous system may need treatment right alongside any infection — and it’s especially important for males (higher testosterone) to beat sickness, with more human studies needed.

💪 BODY: Many talk about fighting chronic inflammation and health—but this article shows that, in some cases, chronic inflammation fights for you. Health experts are learning new ways to “wrangle” inflammation for the good fight against cancer, autoimmunity, and other chronic illnesses instead of completely shutting down what is meant to be a good thing—read more about it here.

🧘 SPIRIT: Can you find spirituality through…hula hooping?! Read this article which explains how this simple physical activity, based on the toy invention from the 1950’s, has helped people establish a mind-body connection that feels like Zen, religion, and physical fitness all at the same time—and it has way more “followers” than you might think.

You make mistakes…mistakes do not make “you”
