Plus: the elusive creature known as the "forest giraffe"
Happy Friday my friend,
Is “blue lava” real? 🌋 This photographer’s stunning photos were taken at dusk, in a natural volcanic area where pure sulfur meets lava, which “emits an icy violet color as it burns.”

♻️ REMARKABLE RENEWABLES: Clean energy is on a roll! For the first time ever, renewable sources like solar and wind power made up over 40% of global electricity generation in 2023, says a new report, which marks a significant shift in power origin. To learn about the top economies accounting for the highest renewable energy generation, click here.
🐼 RED PANDA PROTECTION: Nepal has established its first ever community-based red panda conservation area! With fewer than 15k individual red pandas remaining in the wild, this initiative— covering 200+ acres of broad-leaved community-run forests— aims to protect the endangered furry small mammal and promote ecotourism in the area.
🦟 CITY LIGHT FRIGHT: Are street lights “bugging out” the insects?! New research shows Beijing streetlights make nearby tree leaves tougher for insects to munch on. This might be good for the trees, but could disrupt the urban ecosystem. “Artificial light at night led to a lower carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, decreased tannin content, and smaller leaf size,” this Frontiers in Plant Science research paper states.

🍿 SNACK-QUISITION: In the biggest acquisition deal of the year, candy giant Mars is buying Kellanova, the maker of Pringles, for $36B. The combined company says they’ll hold prices steady despite inflation, focusing on investing in its snacking division and will “introduce more healthy options through the deal, as the category is ‘attractive and durable.’” While processed snack food is not typically thought of as inclusive of “healthy options,” it’s important to keep an eye on mergers of this scale, and the further centralization of the convenience food market globally.
😴 SLEEP CATCH-UP: Is there a benefit to “catching up” on lost sleep? After studying sleep data from 90k people, scientists say the risk of heart disease decreased “about 20% for people who slept in on the weekends to catch up on sleep lost earlier in the week,” and the association becomes “even more pronounced among individuals who regularly experience inadequate sleep on weekdays," the study co-author adds.
🧠 CHILDHOOD INFLAMMATION: “There is really strong evidence that inflammation earlier on in childhood is a significant risk factor for developing schizophrenia, depression and insulin resistance in later life,” say researchers, in a new study published in JAMA Psychiatry. The lead author states that it’s “clear that the inflammation pre-dates instances of mental illness and potentially related metabolic dysfunction, and as such further research needs to be done into the mechanisms driving it.”
If we surrendered to earth’s intelligence we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Creature Feature
🦓 OKAPI: This elusive creature, often referred to as the "forest giraffe," is a unique mammal native to the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. With its zebra-like stripes and giraffe-like neck, the okapi is a fascinating blend of two distinct species. Despite its striking appearance, it remains relatively unknown to many, as its remote habitat make it difficult to spot.
