9/25/24: 3 'sprinkles' for health

Plus: Thursday's chronic pain event

Happy Wednesday my friend,

No one is intentionally trying to avoid nutrients.

However, the processed, sugar-filled, convenient “food-like” products have dominated our food landscape…and as a society, we aren’t making nutrition a high enough priority.

Even when aiming for local, regeneratively grown, organic food...some of the most "healthy" foods contain only a fraction of the nutrient load they once held decades ago.

A common carrot today is a mere silhouette compared to the nutrient levels in a carrot from a few generations back [study].

As we've discussed at Earth Conscious Life (and in our film The Need To GROW) this mostly comes down to how we treat our soils.

WITH THAT SAID - it's more important than ever to be on the lookout for 'nutrition hacks' – ways to sneak nutrition into foods you're already eating.

Nutritional supplements still play a vital role for many vitamins and minerals (the average doctor is not taught nutrition, so I hope you find one willing to help you test for more than just Vitamin D)...

...but ideally we get as much nutrient density from food as possible.

This is where my "Nutrient Sprinkles" come in.

CHIA SEEDS:

Chia contains a TON of fiber and beneficial amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, and more.

Chia seeds go easily in a smoothie or oatmeal, but you may not have thought to add them to soups, curries, or even desserts like pudding and cookies.

Chia has been associated with supporting weight loss goals, healthy digestion, managing blood sugar, and so much more.

HEMP SEEDS:

Always have hemp seeds on hand in the kitchen too. They go pretty much anywhere the chia seeds went.

Sprinkle them generously into smoothies, soups, warm bowls, salads, even on sandwiches.

Phosphorous, folate, magnesium, thiamin, manganese...are just a few of the great nutrients you'll be boosting when you toss in a few tablespoons of this incredible superfood.

Nowhere near the fiber content of chia seeds, but a simple, fast, easy nutrient boost, with no added sugar.

KELP FLAKES:

Kelp flakes come in a shaker like dried herbs. Adding a few shakes onto almost any dish is unlikely to affect the existing flavor by much. Especially if it’s something you can mix into, you'll hardly know it was added!

Iodine deficiency is directly correlated with thyroid health, but that's not where it stops.

The body is an interconnected, holistic system and deficiency of this key nutrient also affects metabolism, brain health, and more.

Roughly 20% of the world is known to be iodine deficient, according to the World Health Organization.

1 teaspoon of kelp flakes gives you 970% of your daily iodine level - so talk to your doctor if you’re concerned of overdoing it, because too much can result in similar issues that occur with too little.

You don't need much added to get close to 100% of the ‘recommended daily allowance’.

All three options are so mild that unless you use way too much, your family should not be able to tell it was added.

Some people have a hard time starting new habits, so think in terms of super charging the meals you already enjoy.

Sprinkling in these foods won’t turn a fast food burger into a health food. But a bit here or there consistently added to pasta, entrees, salads, and smoothies will add up over time.

There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder.

P.S. Do you have any "nutrition hacks" to share with the community that can simplify the process of incorporating more vitamins/minerals to existing dishes, without having to fully overhaul your diet? Just hit reply and let me know!
