🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

Tuatara
The tuatara looks like a lizard, but is actually the last living member of an ancient reptile line that split off long before most modern lizards showed up (we’re talking dinosaur era). It lives only in New Zealand and moves slow, grows slow, and can live a very long time, which is one reason it feels like a true “living fossil.” CLICK HERE for the overview of why this animal is so UNIQUE.
Here’s the part that makes them so special: Tuatara hatchlings have a light-sensing “third eye” on the top of the head called a parietal eye. It is not used to see shapes like a normal eye, but it can detect light and may help with things like day and season timing. It becomes covered as the tuatara grows, so you usually don’t notice it on adults. For more cool facts on this one-of-kind third eye, GO HERE.
WORD OF THE WEEK

How Noise Pollution Affects Our Nervous System
We talk a lot about air pollution, water quality, and chemicals in our food. But there’s another environmental input that most of us barely think about, even though we may be swimming in it all day long.
Noise.
Traffic outside the window. Or even the hum of the fridge. HVAC systems cycling on and off. A television running in the background. Notification pings. Airplanes overhead. Construction down the street.
Even if you think you’ve “gotten used to it,” your nervous system hasn’t.
