Happy Wednesday {{first name | my friend}},

I just returned from a trip to Europe. Jet lag is a real thing, let me tell you. It was a powerful reminder of how fragile our bodies can be sometimes, and how important circadian balance is for our overall health and energy. Today’s Deep Dive is about more of the sustainability differences I noticed in my week in The Netherlands and Belgium.

Club-winged Manakin

This little bird from the forests of Ecuador and Colombia doesn’t sing with its voice, as you expect from most birds. The male makes a musical note using his wings, almost like he’s playing an instrument instead of flapping. If you want to see this weird talent (nature’s mini-violin), check out this quick story on how a bird can “sing” with its wings.

Two of his wing feathers are modified with thick ridges, and he rubs and vibrates them together insanely fast during courtship. Scientists found those feathers actually resonate at a specific frequency. This piece breaks down how resonating feathers turn into a courtship song.

Cryoconite: Dark dust and organic particles on glacier surfaces that absorb heat and accelerate melting.

Cleanest Laundry Swap I’ve Ever Found

Laundry detergent is one of those things not enough people question.

But when you really look into it, it’s almost always a mix of synthetic fragrance, residues, and chemicals that stay on your clothes… and then sit on your skin all day.

I was genuinely impressed when I came across Root and Splendor.

I don’t say this lightly: it’s the cleanest laundry detergent I’ve personally found (and it also works incredibly well).

The stain remover is practically miraculous - especially with no harsh chemicals.

After speaking with the founder, I can tell you that the level of care, integrity, and obsession with ingredients that went into this isn’t marketing – it’s real. Every decision was made to minimize toxicity and create something you can actually feel good about using.

  • No synthetic fragrance

  • Thoughtfully sourced, non-toxic ingredients

  • Designed to be gentle on skin but still effective

  • Made with a level of intention you rarely see

If you’ve been working to clean up your home, this is one of those easy upgrades that actually matters.

And because she is a fan of my work, she is giving you 25% off to try this out (which is significant for a small business like hers because she doesn’t have the margins like those nasty famous brands with all the fancy TV commercials). Use code ECL.

You can CHECK IT OUT HERE and I think you’ll never want to go back to poisoning your clothes again.

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎

FERULIC ACID: A phytochemical found in rice bran, oats, and apples that neutralizes free radicals and protects skin against UV damage. It’s often used in anti-aging skincare and brain support. Learn about its many applications HERE.

What Europe Reminded Me About Simplicity, Sustainability, and Everyday Health

I just got back from my first trip overseas in quite a while, and one of the things I always appreciate about travel is how it opens your mind and perspectives. It pulls you out of assumptions you didn’t even realize you were carrying. You remember (what should be obvious) that the way your own country does things is not the only way. Sometimes it’s a reminder that other cultures have solved problems we are still pretending are too complicated in other parts of the world.

One of the biggest things I noticed during my time in The Netherlands and Belgium was how normal certain sustainable choices seemed to be. Just built into daily life.

For example, I can hardly remember seeing plastic utensils anywhere. Most of what I came across was compostable cutlery, along with more thoughtful materials for little plates, takeaway containers, and even the lids on hot drinks. It stood out to me because in the U.S., so much convenience still comes wrapped in plastic, lined with plastic, or handed to you with a plastic fork that gets used once and thrown away. Over there, it felt like virtually every business had already accepted that we can do better, and moved on.
