Cuttlefish
Cuttlefish are the ocean's great shape-shifters. Their skin has millions of tiny pigment sacs that they open and close on command, letting them switch color and pattern in a fraction of a second. Sometimes they look like sand to hide. Or send waves of color rippling down their bodies to trick a crab just before they grab it. They're cousins of the octopus and squid, and just as clever, with the biggest brain-to-body ratio of any invertebrate.
Crazy fact: they're colorblind. Cuttlefish have only one kind of light receptor in their eyes, so as far as scientists can tell, they can't actually see the colors they're producing. Somehow they still match their surroundings with uncanny accuracy. They also have blue blood and three hearts, so this is another example of nature’s amazing diversity in design.

Darkness is a Nutrient
When it comes to light in the bedroom, Riana and I are a mission to sleep in the equivalent of a modern day cave. How do we get it darker?
The pinprick on the phone charger. The glow on a power strip. The sliver coming in where the blackout curtain doesn't quite meet the wall. We tape it, cover it, move it, and do whatever we can to keep those photons away from our body during sleep.
It sounds obsessive to some people, but I've come around to thinking it's closer to a type of darkness ‘nutrition’ that more of us should be aiming for.
What is your body waiting for after sunset?
Your body doesn't track time with a clock. It tracks the light of your surroundings. When the light goes, melatonin rises, your core temperature drops, and the whole overnight repair is set into motion.
When the light doesn't go, none of that happens on schedule.
The threshold is lower than most people would guess. Harvard's researchers put it at about eight lux, which is dimmer than a table lamp and roughly twice that of a nightlight. That's enough to start interfering with melatonin.
