This week's top stories on human & ecosystem health

Happy Friday my friend,

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope it was a day to focus on gratitude. 🙂 Have you seen this fascinating capture of “the Pillars of Creation” by the James Webb Space Telescope?! It’s mind blowing that this exists… out there. 👽🚀

💩 POO-LINATOR: Researchers have discovered that these river manatees disperse seeds across the Amazon through their feces, fertilizing nutrient-poor areas. “They deliver the seeds with natural fertilizer, a real gardening kit,” one researcher commented. These underwater giant gardeners face extinction, and also provide a critical insight into seed dispersal and plant habitats in the Amazon’s fragile ecosystem.

♻️ SOLAR RECYCLING: Where do the solar panels go when they’ve reached their end? SolarCycle is opening THIS new recycling facility in Georgia, which will process roughly 10M panels annually. It’s the first of its kind in the U.S. to manufacture glass for crystalline-silicon photovoltaics from old solar glass. “If we do this right, we can make solar the most circular industry in the world,” said SolarCycle’s founder.

🐋 OCEAN-DEGRADABLE: Tired of plastic pollution choking our oceans? A team of researchers developed a groundbreaking new plastic that's as strong as conventional but completely biodegradable in seawater. This innovative material could revolutionize industries, including landfills. “In soil, sheets of the new plastic degraded completely over the course of 10 days, supplying the soil with phosphorus and nitrogen similar to a fertilizer,” this article reports.

🧬 SMART CELLS: Just published in Current Biology, new findings indicate “individual cells appear to be capable of a complex type of learning typically associated with whole nervous systems.” Cells can “habituate to stimuli” and then return to their original response strength. This discovery could have implications for understanding how the immune system works and how to prevent it from “habituating” to cancer cells. If you’d like to learn more about the single-celled organism demonstrating habituation, see a microscope photo here.

🧠 DEPRESSED/GUT: What does your gut bacteria reveal? In this recent study, participants with major depressive disorder exhibited a “higher abundance of proinflammatory bacteria” and a lower abundance of beneficial bacteria (which help support gut health and reduce inflammation.) Through combining data from hippocampal activity and the gut microbiome, scientists speculate that these biomarkers might eventually help in identifying individuals at risk for major depressive disorder. Read more about the specifics of this study— and the specific bacteria strains identified— here.

💓 REGROWN HEART: A study published this week suggests our heart might have a built-in repair kit we never knew about! With assistance from a new type of pump, damaged hearts can grow new muscle cells even more than healthy hearts, according to a new discovery that could help heart failure patients recover faster.
