12/6/24: 🐅Tiger comeback, life extension, world's largest solar

Plus: brain health alert, and how processed foods affect the skin

Happy Friday my friend,

My personal understanding of nutrition and bio-individuality transformed when I studied at Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). So much so, I convinced my wife Riana to go through the entire course herself – which she is doing right now! IIN extended the 30% Black Friday (40% for some courses!) and if you were ever on the fence, now’s the time to seize it alongside my wife. Use code is ECLXIIN.

ECL TRIVIA: What is the primary pigment found in plants that gives them their green color? (Answer below)

🐅 TIGER RETURN: The population of tigers in India has more than doubled since 2006 to 3.7k (from 1.4k tigers nearly 20 years ago.) Supported by Project Tiger, “a government initiative that funds conservation activities through annual plans prepared by tiger reserves,” the 6% annual increase in monitored areas is a “significant achievement.”

🌊 CLIMATE CASH: The Caribbean island nation of Barbados has initiated the world’s first “debt-for-climate” swap to create a state-of-the-art water management facility, with additional resources towards mangrove conservation projects and agricultural resilience. “The Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Inter-American Development Bank gave $70M” to start development. Learn more about this innovative conversion here.

☀️ ELECTRIC ENERGY: Off the coast of China, the world’s largest offshore solar farm just powered up. It spans over 3k acres 5 miles from land, and features 2.9k solar platforms above the water which will generate “1.78B kW hours of electricity annually, enough to power around 2.67M urban homes.” Click here to read more and see a photo to understand the scale of this project. With an unprecedented installation, there are many unknowns, and skeptics wonder the impact on marine ecosystems.

🍿 AVOIDING PSORIASIS: A new study linked intake of ultra-processed foods to increased psoriasis flare-ups in older adults. Highly processed goodies, like chips, sugary cereals, and processed meats, seem to be triggering inflammatory responses in the body, disrupting gut health due to endotoxins leaking into the bloodstream, and exacerbating skin issues. To learn how nutrition vs. genes play a role, click here to read more.

🧠 BRAIN PAIN: Published this week, scientists say “even brief exposure” with this common weed killer can cause lasting damage to the brain, with effects long after direct exposure stops. Earlier studies show glyphosate, the most common chemical herbicide on the market, crosses the blood-brain barrier and can interact with brain tissue. If “even brief contact” with this common herbicide can cause brain damage, “these findings highlight that many chemicals we regularly encounter, previously considered safe, may pose potential health risks,” the co-author notes.

🚶‍♀️ LIFESPAN EXTENSION: What if the least physically active 25% of the population took a walk every day? A new predictive model, based on this study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggests that “for each hour of walking they do, they can extend their life by about 6 hours.” Read more about how something as simple as taking a walk could add years to your life here.

🐒 VENOMOUS PRIMATE: They’re adorable, but also poisonous. The slow loris has venom glands inside its arms, and when mixed with its saliva from a bite, can prove deadly. Admire this big-eyed, tiny-sized sloth-type arboreal creature from afar in this 30-second video.

💜 MORE THAN FOOD: Riana here! I’m saying hello to share what I’m learning in my IIN certification program. How can you boost your mental and spiritual nourishment in these last few weeks of 2024? Dr. George Vaillant at Harvard proposes 8 highly positive emotions constitute a spiritual connectedness. Through these emotions and social connection, we build resilient neuro-circuitry. “Our whole concept of psychotherapy might change if clinicians set about enhancing positive emotions rather than focusing only on negative emotions,” Dr. Vaillant states in this paper.
