Plus: the man who sings to animals

Happy Friday my friend,

And happy Spring to our Northern Hemisphere readers!

A cow serenade? This musician carries a pink guitar and sings for creatures all over the world, and the reactions of the animals are often very curious and heartwarming, like this one.🐮

♻️ UK’S COAL DECLINE: Because the UK’s coal usage has dropped so significantly, new preliminary data says usage is the lowest since 1666! Carbon Brief reports that “2024 emissions fell to 409M tons of carbon dioxide equivalent,” a level not seen since the late 1800s. Learn more here about this new metric and contributing factors, including EV increases.

🐋 NUTRIENT CONVEYOR BELT: Massive quantities of whale pee has been discovered to be a major contributor in cycling nutrients around the globe. Migrating baleen whales, like humpbacks, “shuttle resources from nutrient-rich polar regions to the less resourced warmer regions of the oceans,” such as Hawaii. Urine disperses nitrogen and other elements, and contributes to a great circle of life in the ocean. Read more here, and see a cool illustration about this.

🌽 GMO CORN BAN: In an effort to protect native heirloom varieties of corn as “native corn is branded as an ‘element of national identity,’” genetically modified corn is officially banned from being planted in Mexico. Mexico’s president says “we have to protect it for biodiversity but also culturally, because corn is what intrinsically links us to our origins, to the resistance of Indigenous peoples.” Learn more about the ban here.

🧑‍⚕️ Human Health

🤚 SYNTHETIC SUPERSKIN: A major innovation breakthrough in science has been achieved, as this team discovered a type of entanglement within polymer layers that can act like human skin. “The hydrogel is 80-90% repaired within the first four hours of being cut and wholly restored after 24 hours. The hydrogel has around 10k layers of nanosheets in a sample that is one millimeter thick, allowing it to achieve stiffness akin to human skin while enabling it to stretch,” reports this article.

🖼 NATURE’S PRESCRIPTION: Does exposure to nature have a physical effect on your brain's “pain-sensing pathways?” This exciting new research says that viewing nature may lessen sensations of pain. "Our study is the first to provide evidence from brain scans that this isn’t just a ‘placebo’ effect– driven by people’s beliefs and expectations that nature is good for them," said the lead author. "Instead, the brain is reacting less to information about where the pain is coming from and how intense it feels."

🌿 PLASTIC PLANTS: Plastics have been found in human brains, and now, even the photosynthesis process of plants is being disrupted by microplastics. The authors of this new study state this could decrease yields of “staple crops such as rice, wheat and maize by between 4% and 14%” resulting in food shortages. Based on extrapolated data, these stats may not apply on a global scale, so certainly more research is needed, however environmentalists and the World Economic Forum say microplastics is a “top ten threat,” competitive with biodiversity loss.

Photo of the week
