Happy Wednesday {{first name | my friend}},

You can dial in every macro on your plate and still miss the one nutrient you can't eat. Today's Deep Dive gets into why the people sitting around your table may do more for your health than any superfood in the cabinet. Also: a giraffe cousin who stayed hidden from science until 1901, a summer-scented Word of the Week, and a prostate-friendly plant sterol in Nutrition 101. 🍽️

🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

🦒Okapi

The okapi is one of the strangest-looking animals in the Congo. It looks like a few creatures blended into one: zebra-striped legs, a horse-shaped body, and the face of a giraffe. In fact, okapis are the only living relatives of the giraffe. Western scientists didn't even know they existed until 1901, though the Mbuti people of the forest had lived alongside them for generations.

Okapis feed with a long, dark tongue that reaches about a foot and strips leaves right off the branch. It's long enough that they can use it to clean their own eyes and ears. They're endangered now, with only a few thousand thought to remain as logging and hunting shrink their forest home. For an animal that stayed hidden this long, they could use a little looking after.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Aestival: Relating to summer, especially the warmth and character of the season.

The 50 longevity steps almost nobody talks about

My friend Brian Vaszily has spent 25 years digging into what actually extends a healthy life, and he's pulled the best of it into one place. His World's BEST Longevity Summit gathers the 50 little-known, science-backed steps that move the needle most, many of them rooted in food and daily customs that reach well past the usual Blue Zones talk.

He's also brought in 21 other doctors and researchers, each sharing the three or four most powerful moves from their own corner of health, covering brain and heart, gut, sleep, mood, joints, and skin. Sign up at no cost and you'll also get his new 20-page guide on keeping your brain sharp as you age, including the everyday products that dull it (the average woman uses 12 of them daily) and the foods that do the opposite.

Right after you register, watch for the 5-second technique for deeper sleep and lower blood pressure. Save your spot here.

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎

BETA-SITOSTEROL: A plant sterol found in nuts, seeds, and avocados that supports cholesterol balance and prostate health. It also has immune-modulating effects. HERE IS A SUMMARY of how it’s used and common side effects.

The Nutrient You Can't Eat

We spend some much time talking about dialing in the perfect plate and nutritional habits. Omega-3s, polyphenols, fermented everything, the right olive oil poured at the right temperature. Meanwhile the science keeps circling back to something most of us leave off the list: the people we eat with.

Just how much does connection matter?

A 2010 analysis that pooled 148 studies and more than 300k people found that those with strong social ties were about 50% less likely to die early than those without them. Researchers at Stanford's compassion lab note that a lack of social connection does more damage to your health than obesity, smoking, or high blood pressure. It works alongside diet, and can outweigh it. That's a strange thing to consider with when you've just spent forty dollars on a bag of superfoods and eaten them by yourself.
