🧲 Magnetic migrations, red light healing, desert bunnies
Wildlife, ecosystems, language, nutrition, sustainable living, and personal recommendations
Happy Wednesday my friend,
This week: a desert-dwelling “Easter Bunny,” animals that navigate by magnetic field, and a word for the grief we feel when nature changes.
Also—if you’ve been curious about red light therapy, now’s the time. BON CHARGE is running their big mid-year sale, and the Demi device I use is the perfect size and power combo to get started.

🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

The Bilby
The bilby is Australia’s desert-dwelling “Easter Bunny,” with oversized ears, a silky coat, and a long, twitchy snout. These nocturnal marsupials are expert diggers—each night they turn over large areas of soil, helping native plants grow and spreading fungal spores. That’s why bilbies are known as ecosystem engineers, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy land.
Sadly, bilbies have vanished from most of their original range due to habitat loss, invasive predators, and competition from rabbits. But conservation groups are reintroducing them into protected areas and tracking their success with some creative tech—including 3D-printed burrow replicas!
To celebrate and support this important species, Aussies have embraced the Easter Bilby as a symbol of wildlife-friendly holidays. You can get involved or donate to projects through Save the Bilby Fund.
WORD OF THE WEEK
Solastalgia: Emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change or destruction.
🌎 INTO THE…🌎

Into the Animal Navigation
How do animals find their way across vast oceans, forests, and deserts—often with astonishing precision? The world of animal navigation is full of marvels, revealing senses and strategies that stretch the limits of our imagination. Many migratory birds, for example, travel thousands of miles using a combination of the sun, stars, Earth’s magnetic field, and even familiar landmarks to stay on course. Young birds often hatch with genetic programming that gives them a basic sense of direction, but as they gain experience, they learn to fine-tune their routes using mental maps and environmental cues.
Other animals have their own remarkable navigation tricks. Sea turtles cross entire oceans to return to the same nesting beaches where they were born, using a “magnetic map” encoded in their brains to detect subtle differences in Earth’s magnetic field. Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles from Canada to Mexico, relying on a time-compensated sun compass—adjusting their orientation as the sun moves across the sky—and even a backup magnetic compass when sunlight is unavailable. Salmon famously return to the streams where they hatched, using the Earth’s magnetic field for long-distance travel and then switching to olfactory cues to pinpoint their home river as they near the coast.
Animal navigation is a blend of instinct, learning, and environmental cues—a testament to the ingenuity of evolution and the deep connections all creatures share with the planet. As scientists continue to unlock the secrets behind these epic journeys, we gain new appreciation for the remarkable ways animals move through the world.
Perfect Balance
Looking for a natural way to support your body’s healing, energy, and sleep? I’ve been using red light therapy for years—and after trying countless devices, the one I keep coming back to is from BON CHARGE.
Their Demi Red Light Device strikes the perfect balance of power, size, and affordability. It’s compact enough to travel with (yes, I’ve used it on the road), but still delivers clinical-grade wavelengths that support cellular repair, reduced inflammation, and better sleep. I personally use it while working at the computer, or even winding down in the evening, giving my body a reset after long days at the screen. Also great for supporting muscle recovery after hikes or workouts.
The science behind red light is legit—and BON CHARGE is a brand I trust for quality, safety, and results. If you’ve been curious about red light therapy but didn’t want a full-body panel just yet, the Demi is a fantastic entry point.
They’re doing their big mid-year 25% off right now, so CLICK HERE to check it out.

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎
CHROMIUM: Chromium is an essential trace mineral found in foods like whole grains, broccoli, meats, and nuts. It plays a key role in supporting healthy metabolism by enhancing the action of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Chromium helps your body break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and may support blood sugar balance—especially in people with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. While true deficiency is rare, getting enough chromium can help with energy production and may even have modest benefits for weight management and cholesterol levels. Most people can meet their needs through a varied diet, making supplements unnecessary for most.

DEEP DIVE TITLE

When people picture coral reefs, they often imagine postcard-perfect scenes: crystal-clear waters, schools of vibrant fish, and sprawling underwater gardens. But coral reefs are far more than a visual wonder. Beneath their beauty lies a critical life support system — not just for marine creatures, but for us.
This isn’t just a biodiversity story. It’s a human health story. Reefs feed us, shield us, heal us, and root entire cultures. And as these ecosystems erode, so do many of the unseen foundations that support human well-being.
Let’s dive into how coral reefs and human health are intertwined — and what we stand to lose if we don’t protect them.
