🌎 Planet Health

🌿 NATURE SOUNDS MIXTAPE: This week, the Museum for the United Nations released the 2nd annual “nature mixtape,” an initiative where “artists release songs with nature sounds that generate streaming royalties which are put towards nature conservation efforts,” with last year’s release generating more than $200k for conservation. Learn more and listen here. (Also: did you know country superstar Kacey Musgraves released this 21-minute forest-inspired meditation song on Tuesday?)

🪐 UNUSUAL ORBIT: A new planet has been discovered that scientists say orbits with perpendicular rotation around 2 entities, “brown dwarf” bodies. Like Tatooine in Star Wars, this planet orbits 2 “stars,” but what makes this discovery exciting is this new planet’s perfect 90-degree orbit has never been witnessed— only theorized— until now! Learn more about this space discovery here.

🐳 BAHAMIAN WHALES: Two critically endangered North Atlantic right whales were spotted in the Bahamas on April 15— the first recorded sighting in the country. Typically found off the U.S. East Coast, their presence highlights possible shifting migration patterns, but “what inspired them to make this journey will likely remain a mystery.” Sadly, just 372 individuals are living today, so conservation and research of these gentle giants is essential. Read more about the rare sighting here.

🧑‍⚕️ Human Health

🤰 OVARIAN PLASTICS: A new study has detected microplastics in human ovarian follicular fluid for the first time, in 14 out of 18 women undergoing fertility treatments. The potential impacts on female fertility and reproductive health is still unknown, but best practices to minimize exposure to plastics include storing food in glass or stainless steel (not plastic), never microwaving food in plastic or to-go containers, and— especially for clothing you sweat or sleep in— ditch the polyester, rayon, and nylon! Click here to learn more about the study.

🚫 FOOD DYE PHASE-OUT: The Health and Human Services in the US announced Tuesday plans to ban 8 petroleum-based artificial food dyes nationwide over the next 2 years. The ambitious goal to phase them out within 2 year is a big leap forward from originally rumored timelines according to this article. You may remember I personally spoke at the march on Kellogg’s leading this movement into the forefront of public awareness, so this is deeply significant to me and my friends who have pounded the pavement for so many years about this issue.

👖 REGENERATIVE FASHION: Popular lifestyle brand Anthropologie announced their continued partnership this week with our friends at Kiss The Ground to “promote regenerative agriculture and raise awareness on the soil health movement,” through these reimagined clothing products featuring third-party certified regenerative cotton. Their collaboration helped transition 25k acres to regenerative agricultural practices, and funded over 200 farmers to regenerate their farmlands.

Trivia Answer:

The Arctic Tern. This small seabird travels 45k-60k miles each year between the Arctic and Antarctic. It literally lives in endless summer—following the sun year-round.
