Happy Friday my friend,
An animal sanctuary in the southern U.S. just built their happy animals an adorable waterpark, made from a lot of repurposed, recycled, and secondhand materials. Check out the site to watch a short clip here!

🌎 Planet Health
🌏 OZONE HOLE SHRINKING: Good news: the hole in the ozone layer “was smaller in 2024 than in recent years— a huge win for the planet,” this article reported earlier this week. Scientists estimate the Antarctic ozone layer could return to its pre-hole levels, similar to the 1980s, by the year 2066. Find out more here.
👨🏫 SOLAR IN SCHOOLS: In remote East India, flood-prone area schools are getting solar panels so they can finally use classrooms and digital online learning, despite unreliable or no grid power. Click here to see how solar technology is also powering fans and clean water systems to help these children learn, making school more comfortable, even in extreme heat and humidity.
🐳 SAVE THE WHALES: Sometimes, you gotta think small! Scientists are now predicting where North Atlantic right whales gather by focusing on their actual prey (tiny zooplankton) rather than just using broad proxies like satellite chlorophyll levels. “You can’t protect whales if you don’t know where they are— and they go where the food is,” this article states.

🧑⚕️ Human Health
🚴♂️ CYCLING FOR COGNITION: A study of nearly 480k people with an average age of 56 revealed that cycling was linked to “a 19% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 22% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease compared to those who used non-active travel methods like driving or public transportation.” Cycling was also correlated with larger memory-related brain areas and cognitive health. Though it can’t prove that cycling prevents dementia, this study is a great reminder that physical exercise can work miracles for long term health!
🌱 PLASTIC IN PLANTS: Groundbreaking research shows nanoplastic particles can be absorbed through plant roots and make their way to the edible parts of plants. “This is the first time a study has demonstrated nanoplastic particles could get beyond that barrier, with the potential for them to accumulate within plants,” then passed into the mouths and stomachs of those that eat it. Learn more here.
📱 TEENS IN NEW JERSEY: In my home state of New Jersey, following new state legislation, a commission of parents, superintendents, child advocacy organizations and teachers have released these guidelines for teen cell phone and social media usage. They say these recommendations “need to happen immediately” to protect adolescent mental and emotional health. Click to read the story and watch the 2-min summary.
