🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

The ripples of a rarely seen Platypus in the wild

The Platypus

Meet the platypus, one of Earth’s most peculiar mammals, native to eastern Australia. Instantly recognizable by its duck-like bill, webbed feet, and beaver-like tail, this unique animal lays eggs instead of giving birth to live young (one of only five monotreme species left on the planet). Early European naturalists were baffled by the platypus’s appearance and considered it a hoax when specimens first arrived. Discover more in Britannica.

Perfectly adapted for life in water, the platypus forages underwater, relying on electroreception through its specialized bill to locate prey, even when swimming with eyes and ears closed. Its dense fur keeps it insulated in cool streams and rivers. Dive into its aquatic behavior and adaptations.

A truly remarkable mammal, the male platypus sports venomous spurs on its hind legs, capable of delivering a painful sting. Though shy and largely nocturnal, it is now a cherished Australian icon. Learn about ongoing conservation efforts to protect the platypus.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Hygge: A danish word for a cozy, comfortable feeling of warmth and contentment.

🌎 INTO THE…🌎

Into the Great Rift Valley

Journey into the Great Rift Valley, a vast geological wonder that stretches over 6,000km from Lebanon in the Middle East down through eastern Africa to Mozambique. This monumental trench is dotted with deep lakes, active volcanoes, and dramatic escarpments, forming a landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth. The terrain shaped the earliest chapters of human history.

The Great Rift Valley is a hotspot for biodiversity, providing sanctuary to unique wildlife and supporting vibrant ecosystems. From the flamingo-filled lakes of Kenya to Ethiopia’s lush highlands, this region bursts with life. Much of it found nowhere else. Explore the valley’s extraordinary habitats and their ecological significance in this World Wildlife Fund feature.

Known as the “cradle of humanity,” the valley holds some of the world’s oldest hominid fossils, offering critical insight into our origins. Archaeologists have unearthed ancient tools and skeletal remains here that trace the evolution of humans.

Magic morning formula for feeling GOOD

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎

PHYTOESTROGENS: Phytoestrogens are plant-derived compounds found in foods like flaxseed, soy, sesame, and chickpeas that gently mimic estrogen’s effects in the body. Including them in your diet—through whole grains, legumes, seeds, and colorful vegetables—may help support heart, bone, and hormone health for many, though it’s best to consult your provider if you have hormone-sensitive health concerns. Get a quick primer on food sources and potential benefits in this Healthline explainer.

The Power of Camping: Rewilding Through Simplicity & Discomfort

This past weekend, Riana and I went camping just under the shadow of Mt. Rainier. It was a new moon, which meant the stars came out in full force. Unfiltered, and unbothered by the glow of city lights, we enjoyed simple food (especially with the fire ban which meant no campfire!), got our feet dirty, and fell asleep to the sound of distant wind threading through alpine trees.

There wasn’t WiFi. No schedule. And nothing particularly “comfortable” in the conventional sense. But something real happens out there. Something hard to explain unless you’ve felt it: the quiet return of aliveness.

Camping, in its simplicity and discomfort, is more than a fun escape. It’s a practice of remembering. Of recalibrating. Of choosing presence over convenience.
