Rainforest Gliders, Garden Allies, and a New Way to Recharge
Wildlife, ecosystems, language, nutrition, sustainable living, and personal recommendations
Happy Wednesday my friend,
Nature is full of surprises, and few creatures capture that sense of wonder quite like the colugo. Sometimes called the “flying lemur,” this rainforest glider isn’t a lemur at all—but it does have a built-in wingsuit that lets it soar between trees with ease. This week, we’ll explore the secret lives of colugos, highlight the magic of pollinator pathways, and share a few simple ways to reconnect with the subtle energies of the natural world. Plus, don’t miss our nutrition spotlight and a dose of inspiration in Rob’s Picks!

🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️
The Colugo
Meet the colugo—sometimes called the “flying lemur,” though it’s neither a true lemur nor capable of true flight. Native to the dense rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, the colugo is a master glider and one of nature’s most remarkable mammals. Its most striking feature is the patagium, a vast, fur-covered membrane stretching from its neck to the tips of its fingers, toes, and tail. This built-in “wingsuit” lets colugos glide as far as 230 feet (70 meters) between trees—making them the best gliders of all mammals, even out-gliding flying squirrels.
Despite their aerial prowess, colugos are actually clumsy climbers, inching up tree trunks with sharp claws rather than leaping. They’re strictly nocturnal and solitary, foraging at night for leaves, shoots, flowers, sap, and fruit, and resting camouflaged against tree bark or in tree holes during the day. Their large, forward-facing eyes give them excellent night vision, while webbed feet and strong claws help them grip the high canopy.
Mothers carry their babies in their patagium, using it like a hammock for protection and warmth—a bit like a marsupial pouch. Colugos are threatened by deforestation, as they depend on large, uninterrupted forests to glide and survive. With their gliding superpowers and secretive lifestyle, colugos remain a true wonder of the treetops—and a vivid reminder of the wild ingenuity found in Earth’s rainforests.
WORD OF THE WEEK
Heliolatry: A worship or reverence of the sun.
🌎 INTO THE…🌎
Into the Pollinator Pathways
Imagine a landscape where bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds can travel freely—finding food, shelter, and safe passage through a connected network of blooming gardens. That’s the heart of pollinator pathways: pesticide-free corridors of native plants that link parks, yards, farms, and even roadside verges, creating lifelines for pollinators in a world where their habitats are increasingly fragmented by development and agriculture.
Pollinator pathways aren’t just beautiful—they’re essential. Over 80% of flowering plants and about a third of our food crops depend on animal pollination, but habitat loss and chemicals have put many pollinator species at risk. By planting native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees that bloom from spring to fall, and by leaving patches of bare ground or brush for nesting, we can turn even the smallest green spaces—like flower boxes or curb strips—into stepping stones for pollinators to thrive.
These corridors act as bridges, connecting isolated habitats and supporting genetic diversity, ecosystem resilience, and even better crop yields. The best part? Anyone can join in. Whether you have a balcony, backyard, or community garden, you can be part of the movement—plant, protect, and spread the word about pollinator pathways in your neighborhood. Together, we can help pollinators find their way home.
🌎 Subtle Earth Energies
Forest bathing allows your body, mind, and spirit to reconnect to the rhythms and subtle energies of nature.
Everything that disconnects us from the cycles we evolved with is at least slightly disruptive to our overall optimized health.
Another way I weave natural healing into my life is through my “PEMF mat”.
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) is a growing in popularity, and studies show PEMF therapy can be effective in reducing pain, and improving function in people with low back issues or pain in the knees/hands from arthritis.
The heated mat has red light therapy built into the device, to combine multiple modalities in one session! It has become my daily routine to use it every single morning.
Bon Charge's PEMF mats use this science-backed tech to deliver deep relaxation and soothe chronic pain. The mats come in a variety of sizes to fit your needs, and use different wavelengths of light for targeted therapy.

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎
ANTHOCYANINS: Anthocyanins are vibrant plant pigments responsible for the rich red, blue, and purple hues in foods like berries, cherries, red cabbage, and purple sweet potatoes. These powerful phytonutrients are celebrated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to protect your cells from damage and support overall wellness. Research suggests that anthocyanins may boost heart health, improve brain function, and support healthy blood vessels. They’re also linked to better blood sugar balance and a lower risk of certain cancers. To get more anthocyanins, simply add a variety of colorful fruits and veggies to your meals—your body (and your plate) will thank you!

Blue Spaces: How Water Environments Heal Your Mind and Body
Ever notice how your shoulders drop when you're near the ocean? How a flowing river or still lake can bring clarity you didn’t know you needed? It turns out, there’s more to this feeling than poetic metaphor. The science is clear: being near water is good for your mind, your body, and even your sense of connection to the world around you.
These healing environments, often called blue spaces, are being studied for their powerful role in reducing stress, boosting mood, and supporting long-term wellness. In an era of burnout, over-stimulation, and ecological disconnection, water may be one of our most overlooked allies.
