Slime-slinging worms, and science of the heartfield 💓🪱
Wildlife, ecosystems, language, nutrition, sustainable living, and personal recommendations
Happy Wednesday my friend,
From creatures that weave living nets of silk-like slime to the magnetic rhythm of our own beating hearts, nature keeps reminding us that beauty and intelligence show up in unexpected forms. This week’s stories explore both. First, the Velvet Worm’s eco-engineering genius, and the science of the heartfield, where emotion meets energy.

🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

The Velvet Worm
Is it weird that some of the ‘traditionally ugliest’ and most sci-fi-looking creatures are also in some ways the most beautiful? This velvet worm is a squishy hunter that fires twin jets of sticky, protein-rich SLIME to digest its victims (dinner). By rapidly swinging its head, it can weave the streams into a crisscrossed biodegradable net that hardens on contact, pinning insects like termites and crickets. Without getting too detailed, the worm delivers a bite and injects digestive saliva before slurping up the meal. The slime is so resource-intensive that many species later recycle it by eating their own dried strands to reclaim proteins for future shots.
They live in humid leaf litter and rotting logs across the tropics and Southern Hemisphere, and they’re not even true worms or insects! They’re ancient relatives of arthropods with stumpy, fluid-pressurized legs and a plush, velvety cuticle. Luckily, they’re harmless to humans, but would be extraordinary to watch nature’s biodegradable glue gun.
WORD OF THE WEEK
Philocalist: A lover of beauty and all things beautiful.

🍎 NUTRITION 101 🍎
LUTEOLIN: A yellow-hued flavonoid found in celery, thyme, and green peppers, known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and brain-supportive properties. It helps calm oxidative stress and may protect against neurodegeneration and allergic responses. Click HERE to learn the foods with high Luteolin.

🌿 The Mat Everyone Falls in Love With
Whenever someone visits our home, there’s one thing they always end up asking about… our PEMF mat. Once they try it, and understand that its effect is real, they want one.
Our bodies are constantly trying to reconnect with the rhythms of nature, but as you know, most of modern life pulls us in the opposite direction. That’s why I love THIS simple mat from Bon Charge. It helps restore balance in a tangible, science-backed way.
PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy supports cellular repair, circulation, and recovery, while the built-in red light therapy adds gentle warmth and relaxation. I use it most mornings, especially during seasonal transitions when my body needs a little extra grounding.

Last year with guests for dinner who couldn’t stay off the mat
It’s become one of my favorite wellness rituals (and clearly a favorite for guests too) because I can read, meditate, listen to affirmations, or do my math puzzles while on the mat.
Bon Charge recently came out with a suite of new sizes so you can explore the different mat options HERE and use code ECL20 to reduce 20%, available exclusively to our Earth Conscious Life community.

Heartfield: Where Science Meets Spirit
The human heart does more than pump blood. It generates the strongest rhythmic electromagnetic field of any organ in the body. This field, measurable up to several feet away with sensitive instruments called magnetocardiograms, reflects the heart’s electrical activity as it communicates with the brain and nervous system. Research from the HeartMath Institute and peer-reviewed studies published in Frontiers in Neurocardiology and The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggest that heart rhythms influence emotional processing, cognitive function, and even synchronization between individuals.
Scientists at the Heart Rhythm Society and institutions like the National Institutes of Health have confirmed that the heart’s magnetic field can be detected and quantified, offering a window into how emotional states modulate physiological coherence. When we experience feelings like gratitude or compassion, the heart’s rhythm becomes more ordered and harmonic. This means we create a literal state measurable as “heart rate variability coherence”. This coherence doesn’t just benefit cardiovascular health; it aligns the nervous and hormonal systems into balance. The “heartfield,” is now a measurable bridge between emotion, biology, and connection.
