Happy July {{first name | my friend}},

If you looked up Monday night, you caught something rare. The Strawberry Moon that just peaked was a micromoon, riding the lowest path across the sky of any full moon this year thanks to its timing right after the solstice.

🐿️ CREATURE FEATURE 🐿️

Peacock Spider

The male peacock spider is no bigger than a watermelon seed, and somehow pulls off the most dazzling courtship display in the animal kingdom. When a female is watching, he raises a fan of iridescent flaps from his abdomen — like a tropical bird — and begins to dance, waving his legs in choreographed patterns. Researchers have found that females are brutally selective judges, and a male whose moves don't make the cut risks becoming her next meal rather than her mate.

They're native to Australia, each with their own distinct color pattern and dance style. Most people have never heard of them, which makes this VIDEO something you won't forget.

WORD OF THE WEEK

Noosphere: The “sphere of human thought” – the collective field of ideas shaping life on Earth.

Your lungs shouldn't be your air filter

Your home's air can be up to 100x dirtier than what's outside. Dust, mold spores, pet dander, smoke, VOCs off-gassing from cleaning products, all of it circulating through the same air you breathe 20,000 times a day. If you've been dealing with unexplained congestion, itchy eyes, or that low-grade fatigue that won't lift, your indoor air might be the culprit.

AirDoctor's UltraHEPA filtration catches particles 100x smaller than the standard HEPA filter can, down to 0.003 microns, and seals them in so nothing leaks back into your home. It's a fully closed 3-stage system: pre-filter for the big stuff, carbon filter for gases and odors, then UltraHEPA for everything else. Right now AirDoctor is running their Fourth of July event, with reductions up to $709 through July 7th.

If you've been meaning to do something about your indoor air quality, this is the week.

The Cost of ‘Modernizing’ Our Materials

Walk into any building from the 1920s and put your hand on the door hardware. It’s usually brass. Heavy, cool, worn smooth right where a hundred years of palms have turned it before yours. Then step into a new hospital wing or office tower. Stainless steel, sleek and uniform and cold to the touch.

We traded one for the other almost everywhere, but was it actually an upgrade?

Brass wasn't just nice to look at

Brass is mostly copper, and copper does something they never taught us in school: it kills microbes on contact. It’s been measured effectively. Copper ions punch holes in bacterial cell membranes and scramble their DNA, so a brass handrail isn't just sitting there waiting to be wiped down, it's self-cleaning all the time.

That's the reason doorknobs, handrails, and push plates in old hospitals and schools were brass in the first place. Put a copper alloy surface next to standard hospital materials and the bacterial counts on the high-touch spots drop by 90% or more inside a couple hours. Stainless steel does none of that. In fact, it's the thing researchers use as the control surface, because bacteria are about as happy on it as they'd be on plastic or glass.

Then there's how brass ages. It builds a patina over decades instead of just looking beat up, and it feels better under your hand than any synthetic “modern” alternative. The way a place feels when you touch it is part of how it makes you feel at all.

So why did we switch?
