Top 3 Foods Anyone Can Grow
As you probably know, there’s surging interest in growing your own food right now.
If you’ve watched The Need To GROW, then you know the truth already.
Growing your own food is the surest path to food security and independence!
It’s also great for the planet and the environment, too.
Still, other people may have joined a local CSA (community supported agriculture), are getting home delivery, or participating in other ways to support local efforts during food scarcity.
Even more of us have already bought seeds, and are scraping up some good, healthy, organic soil to get a food garden started!
But what if you don’t have space for a garden?
You may be thinking, "That's a nice idea, but I can't grow."
Here’s something: you don’t need a big backyard to grow your own food.
There are tons of food plants you can grow indoors, even on a windowsill, porch, or balcony.
What could you start growing right now, no matter where you live, to provide some extra nutrients for you and your family?
#1: MICROGREENS.
Microgreens are basically sprouts you plant in a tray of soil by seeding them extra-densely.
Then you snip them and add to soups, salads, smoothies or as garnish.
A big handful of seeds gets you a decent haul of microgreens. Vegetables like broccoli, beets, and peas are great microgreen options.
But here’s something amazing: they’re far more nutrient-dense than when they grow into mature vegetables.
They’re just about the easiest thing to grow too. They are almost effortless.
#2: CHIVES.
Instead of growing or buying onions, try chives.
They have very similar flavor (and are full of great vitamins and minerals).
Chives grow very well in low light indoors. That’s why they’re a great option if you want to start growing your own food immediately!
Take any gardening pot, fill it with soil, and plant your chive seeds close together. Place them next to any window in your house, then water them in.
The seeds will grow into a grass-like version of onions.
Harvest their green tops with kitchen scissors (just like the microgreens!) then add a pinch to soups, baked potatoes, salads, you name it.
#3: ROOT CROP GREENS
This might be one of the weirdest ways to grow food or get extra greens in your diet. But stay with me here.
If you’ve got something like a beetroot, rutabaga, turnip, or other root veggie in your fridge, and you’ve been staring at for a while…well, now you have something awesome to do with it.
First step: fill a cup full of water, full enough (and the right cup size) to set your root vegetable atop the container, with its bottom and roots touching the water.
In a few days, greens will sprout from the top!
Add them to smoothies, juices, salads, and more.
These are just some ideas to get you growing food right away.
Maybe they’ll inspire you to expand into a bigger food garden someday (while getting you some green thumb practice).
