Your top stories on human & planetary health
Happy Friday my friend,
It is Valentineās Day and I am on my honeymoon with Riana. ā¤ļø I hope instead of glitter-filled cards, and plastic wrapped sugary chocolates, you find a healthier way of expressing affection to those you love today, and all days. Hereās what Forbes has to say about sustainable ideas.

š PHOSPHOāSOLUTION: Phosphates from fertilizers run-off into streams are creating deadly algae blooms and āpea soupā lakes. Now, this new company is developing PRMā Phosphate Removal Materialā a "sponge" made of natural materials, to combat "phosphogeddon." The co-founder says āour product has a straightforward goalā to transfer phosphates from rivers and lakes where they are causing real damage and move them in a simple manner to farmland, where they can be of use in growing crops,ā addressing both pollution and dwindling phosphate reserves. For another fascinating discovery on this topic, look at this sponge coated with nanoparticles that attract pollutants, used to remove a variety of substances, including metals, plastics, and oil.
ā”ļø CLEAN ENERGY: According to a report from BloombergNEF, the cost of clean energy is predicted to fall by 2-11% in 2025, with a projected decrease of 22-49% by 2035. The report says the cost savings may be a result of China's rapid growth in clean energy tech manufacturing. š CANNABIS BREAKTHROUGH: Researchers have āuncovered a potential way to harness the benefits of THC while minimizing its negative effects by using CBD.ā Scientists have gained new understanding of how CBD behaves and āit actually opens up new prospects or a new horizon in modulating cannabinoid receptors and harnessing THCās beneficial effects for pain management,ā said the lead scientist on the study. š” WIFI WAKE-UP: A groundbreaking new peer-reviewed report challenges the telecommunications industry's fundamental claim about wireless radiation safety. The industry has long maintained that non-ionizing radiation from WiFi, cell phones, and other wireless devices is harmless because it is "non-ionizing." However, Dr. HĆ©roux, an associate professor of medicine at McGill University, demonstrates this argument is scientifically flawed, as electromagnetic radiation can disrupt biological processes at levels far below current safety standards, particularly affecting mitochondrial function and cellular energy production. At a time when we're increasingly surrounded by wireless tech, we should apply the precautionary principle rather than assuming safety based on industry assurances. More research is desperately needed. Watch a concise video presentation by Dr. HĆ©roux HERE and decide for yourself.
šļø CATARACT PREVENTION: Your grandmother was right: eating your carrots really does help your eyesight. New research shows higher blood concentrations of carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin were associated with a reduced risk of nuclear cataract. Lutein, a carotenoid found in leafy greens, fruits, and egg yolks, offers lots of health benefits, and āresearchers have also associated lutein intake with a lower risk of glaucoma, which often arises from increased eye pressure.ā Learn more about how to boost your lutein intake here.
š§ BRAIN MICROPLASTICS: Not-so-fantastic plastic research published in Nature Medicine reveals that brain samples from bodies in 2024 contained 50% more microplastics than those from 2016. The study also found higher levels of microplastics in brains of individuals with dementia. More research is urgently needed, but the discovered ānanoscale shards and flakesā, most commonly polyethylene, should not be increasing in our grey matter! Learn more about this study here.

ā”ļøš² Trusting Big Tech?
Prefer the precautionary principle over taking Big Techās word?
As discussed above, modern life surrounds us with electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by devices we use every day (wifi-routers and cellphones at the top of a long list).
While the debate rages on about the potential long-term health effects of EMFs, some people ā including myself ā choose to take precautions.
This collection offers a variety of EMF-protection strategies to help you manage exposure. Find phone pouches, laptop shields, and anti-radiation blankets designed to reduce your exposure to this minimally tested radiation.
Here are some potential benefits of using EMF-protection products:
Peace of mind: Whether itās ever āconclusiveā or debated for another few decades, find comfort in taking steps to reduce your EMF exposure, before long-term data is analyzed in an unbiased way.
Improved sleep: EMFs can disrupt sleep patterns. Using an EMF-blocking blanket might help you achieve a better night's rest.
Increased focus: If you find yourself feeling drained or weak after using electronic devices, an EMF-protective laptop shield might be worth a try.
If you're concerned about EMF exposure, this is a potential solution to reduce how many of these frequencies pass through your muscle, organs, and brain tissue. To be alive in 2025 society, it wonāt be perfect, but that doesnāt mean we do nothing.

Trivia Answer:
Contrary to popular belief, the Amazon rainforest produces about 6-9% of the world's oxygen, not 20% as often claimed. Most of Earth's oxygen comes from oceanic plankton.
